Engineering company with MSD issues

Client

Specialist engineering/fabrication company employing over 50 staff members.

Issue

Increase in complaints to the occupational health department regarding wrist, shoulder and low back aches and pains with some cases of sickness absence.

What we did

Carried out an audit and task analysis of the manufacturing processes using a variety of assessment tools, including MACART, QEC and REBA.

Tasks included lifting and handling components up and down from the floor, handling with hands at full stretch from the low back, handling above shoulder height and twisting to reach components.

Recommendations were made based on anthropometric data to allow the company to make changes that would fit the staff on site and included

  • Providing work surfaces to eliminate the need to handle up and down from the floor
  • Move machinery to allow easier component loading and reducing need to reach and twist
  • Advice to allow the company to streamline the process to eliminate high levels of double handling
  • Reduction in sickness absence
  • Increased throughput of components
  • Risk factors demonstrably reduced from high to lower level

Benefits to the company

  • Reduction in sickness absence
  • Increased throughput of components
  • Risk factors demonstrably reduced from high to lower level
